Rustington - Still a village - just! | Population c.13,500
Of Saxon origins, this flourishing village lies just to the west of East Preston and has a busy and highly regarded shopping area with many independent shops in addition to the well-known chains, major Banks and the Somerfield and Sainsburys supermarkets are located in and out of the village centre respectively. Rustington is one of the few remaining places where shoppers benefit from free car parking, being time-limited by parking discs available in the local shops and Information Centre.
The village centre is vibrant with colour in the spring and summer months with masses of floral displays. Seats are placed on an attractive landscaped area adjacent to the Millennium Clock and Village Map. In December, the local village shops contribute to the cost of Christmas lighting and the Festive tree.
Part of the village centre, to the west of the 11th Century Parish Church, has been dedicated a Conservation Area with it’s flint-built and thatched cottages on either side of The Street.
Rustington has grown over the years to become a focal point for many people to retire to and there are many homes for that purpose to purchase within easy walking distance of the shops, seafront and other amenities. On the outskirts of the village, modern developments provide a broad cross–section of family homes for all pockets. The prestigious Rustington Sea Estate enables residents to have direct access to the beach, yet the village amenities are only a few minutes away. There are a large number of apartments, both on and close to the seafront, from where there are stunning sea and coastal views to Selsey Bill and the Isle of Wight on a clear day. The beach is a major attraction to homebuyers regardless of age.
A bus service runs through the village and connects with the coastal towns as far as Portsmouth to the west and Brighton to the east. Angmering station is about two miles distant and has direct services to the coastal towns as well as Gatwick airport and London Victoria.
Rustington’s residents successfully fought off the possibility of their village being reclassified as a Town as they are justly proud of its current status and all that goes with it.
